We have only ever used water based inks. They are not the easiest inks to work with, they require great skill and in depth knowledge. You must control your environment and constantly monitor and adapt to the condition of the ink versus the temperature and humidity of the print environment. They aren't more profitable, aren't quicker to print with. So why do we do it?
Simply put, water based inks are THE best print finish on almost all fabrics. The colours are bold, they can be completely soft. They have an insane level of wash fastness when printed and cured properly. They drape beautifully and stretch with the fabric. And that's how our customers benefit.
Our team benefits from the lack of chemicals required to print them, the abscence of harmful fumes, the safe handling and requirment of only water to wash our equipement. We also get the fuzzy feeling inside every day knowing that we are having a positive impact on our industry.
The artwork needs to be separated to created an image for each colour of the design. Gradients can be created by using halftones.
Screens are coated with a biodegradable UV light sensitive emulsion and dried thoroughly to remove all the moisture from the emulsion.
At Get A Grip Studio, we use a CTS printer which prints directly onto the coated and dried screen but smaller print shops often use film positive where the colour layer design is printed with opaque black ink.
The screen is exposed to UV light for a pre determined amount of time based on the power of the light source, the mesh count (how fine detailed the mesh is), the type of emulsion and the thickness of the emulsion. The light penetrates and hardens all areas not coverd by the opaque ink/positive.
The screen is then soaked with water and after a short period washed out with a soft to medium powered water jet to wash out the un-exposed areas of the screen. Where the emulsion is washed out ink can pass through the screen and therefore the stencil is created. The screen is dried ready for printing.
Inks come in various forms and can be used for different effects and finishes on different fabrics. At Get a Grip Studio we only use water based inks, but use both low solids and high solids inks
The screens are checked and taped and set up on the print carousel in the colour order they need to be printed in. The correct size and stiffness squeegees are chosen and the screen are aligned by a series of prints, and checks on test garments
Once the screens are aligned, all the ink is loaded in the screens it is time to print. The best combination of print pressure, squeegee angle and stroke speed is determined and the print comences, loading the garments which stay on the press until all the required screens/colours are applied.
Possibly the most critical stage. Without sufficient curing time the inks won't be wash fast. Water based inks usually require a longer cure time than less environmentally responsible inks.
