DTG or Direct to Garment Printing is a decoration method where ink is applied directly to the fabric from a digital image using a combination of White, Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black ink. The garment must be pre-treated first which is the process of applying and drying a pre-treatment solution which allows the ink to bond with the fabric.
What to look out for with DTG
All DTG prints require a pretreatment to be applied and cured to the garment before it is printed. The pretreat bonds to the fabric, the ink to the pretreat. Black and white tees pretreat and print beautifully but some colours are not as compatible with this process/application. Some of these are below:
Pink Joy, Birght Blues, Bright Greens, Khaki, Bright Orange, Ochre etc.
This is not an exhaustive list so please get in touch if you are thinking about placing a bulk order and what to check the colour first.
Natural Raw is cotton in its purest form - untreated, undyed, and naturally distinctive. It has more loose fibres than other colours and as the ink bonds to the fibre of the garments, Natural Raw products, especially DTG printed can show print 'fading' in a shorted time than all other colours. It can also be more affected by wash cycle and detergents than other colours. If you are happy with the print potentially showing a softening/aging of the print after the first few washes then DTG and Natural Raw can have a beautiful finish. If you want the print to stay bold and strong then we recommend other print methods.
This is less of an issue but if you are looking for super bold single colour areas like vector graphics or text based designs, then DTF and screen printing can offer stronger colours. However what may be reduced slightly in colour strength can be more than made up for in the softness of the print. We recommend ordering a sample of both DTG and DTF before embarking on a bulk order so you can determine your favourite decoration method.
As a CMYK and White printer DTG can handle full colour prints meaning you can have any number of colours in your design for the same price. Also, as there are no screen to prepare, there is no minimum order. You can order just 1 garment or thousands depending on your needs.
One of the most suprising benefits of our DTG printing is the soft finish of the prints. Prints on white garments are so soft you can't feel the print. On dark garments, even black garments, our print method keeps the print soft with a matt finish.
No sticky, shiny prints here!
Our DTG printer can handle designs which blend into the background/t-shirt colour. Its somtimes worth getting in touch with us about this before placing an order but the print software is very clever and applies just the right amount of white ink under the colour ink to allow the design to fade whilst still being strong and wash fast print.
